THE STORY OF A MIGRANT

MADE GOOD – AND DOING GOOD

Shanti Sivaraj has built a successful business in fast food. But what really feeds his soul is giving back. Shanti came to Australia from Sri Lanka some 30 years ago with just $200 in his pocket. He got a job flipping burgers. Today he owns six fast food stores in Perth’s northern suburbs. Yet he has never forgotten the people he left behind in his war-torn homeland. That’s why he founded the Om Shanti Foundation.

The Legacy of Civil War in Sri Lanka

The civil war in Sri Lanka ended in 2009, but the country is still rebuilding. The poor rural villages of the northern Jaffna District were the hardest hit. War wiped out much of the male population and destroyed community infrastructure and livelihoods. The trauma was compounded by the tsunami of 2004. Over 80,000 war widows and their battle-scarred families face daily struggles. Many still lack clean drinking water, sanitation, houses, schools and sustainable incomes. This is where Om Shanti Foundation is striving to change lives.
